Central Piedmont Trustees Elect New Leaders

The Board of Trustees of Central Piedmont Community College has elected a new chair and vice chair. Jim Dunn, executive vice president and chief people and culture officer with Advocate Health, will serve as chair. Caldwell Rose, president of NAI Southern Real Estate, is the new vice chair.

In 2018, Dunn joined Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health, the nation's third-largest non-profit health system, bringing more than 30 years of experience leading talent and culture strategy. He began his career as a research scientist. He transitioned into national and global human resources leadership positions at BP Amoco, the Carter Presidential Center, Cleveland Clinic, American Cancer Society, and Parkland Health. Jim is a nationally registered professional mediator specializing in workplace conflict resolution strategies and a fellow and faculty member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He currently serves on the U.S. Congressional Award Foundation's national board of directors and is a regular contributing author for CNBC, Newsweek, and Forbes magazines.

"Education is the key element to living a happy, healthy life supported by a fulfilling career," said Dunn, who holds doctorate degrees in health administration, organizational development and management, and advanced studies in teaching. "At Central Piedmont, we're opening life's doors for our students a catalyst for opportunity and an exceptional provider of learning experiences that can transform their lives and their economic mobility while simultaneously strengthening our community with a trained and talented workforce. It's an honor to serve as chair."

Rose has served as Central Piedmont trustee since 2015. He joined NAI Southern Real Estate in 1988 and has spent more than 29 years in the commercial real estate industry, specializing in all areas, including land assemblages, office and medical office sales and leasing, as well as investment sales and representation. Recognized by the Charlotte Commercial Board of Realtors as a top producer, Rose also is actively involved with the Charlotte community and with multiple charitable organizations. He is a graduate of St. Andrews College with a degree in business administration. He holds real estate brokerage licenses in both North and South Carolina.

Board of Trustees Chair Named Woman of the Year

Linda Lockman-Brooks named Charlotte Woman of the Year

Linda Lockman-Brooks, a well-respected Charlotte leader and chair of the Central Piedmont Board of Trustees, has been named the 2021 Charlotte Woman of the Year. This prestigious award, now in its 66th year, is given for exceptional community service and exemplary leadership. 

Lockman-Brooks is a Charlotte business executive with extensive leadership experience at large public companies. As a small business owner and entrepreneur, she is the founder and president of Lockman-Brooks Marketing Services, which provides strategic marketing and communications services and executive talent resources to a diverse book of clients.

In July 2021, she was elected to chair the Central Piedmont Board of Trustees by her fellow board members. A college trustee since 2016, Linda is the first female and the first Black person to chair the board in Central Piedmont's 59-year history. 

Linda also co-chaired the "Powering a Stronger Future Campaign," Central Piedmont Foundation's most ambitious fundraising effort. Raising more than $66 million in gifts and commitments, the campaign surpassed its $40-million goal and supports students, programs, and faculty development, providing even greater access to underrepresented persons. 

The Charlotte Woman of the Year was established in 1955 to recognize an individual woman who has distinguished herself through civic leadership and service in the Charlotte Mecklenburg community. The recipient of the Charlotte Woman of the Year award epitomizes the values for which the Charlotte Woman of the Year organization stands and represents the best of who we are as women and as leaders. Past Charlotte Women of the Year honorees vote on nominations to choose each year's winner.

Janet LaBar, Michael Hawley, and Caldwell Rose to Serve

Janet LaBar, president and CEO of the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, has been appointed to the Central Piedmont Community College Board of Trustees by N.C. Governor Roy Cooper. LaBar's four-year term begins July 1.

Charlotte attorney Michael Hawley has been reappointed to the Central Piedmont board by Gov. Cooper for another four-year term. Hawley has been a college trustee since 2017.

Caldwell Rose, president of NAI Southern Real Estate in Charlotte, has been appointed to the Central Piedmont board by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education to a four-year term beginning July 1. This is a continuation of Rose's service as a trustee. He has been a board member since 2015, when he was appointed first by Gov. Pat McCroy.

"The college is excited to welcome Janet LaBar to the Board of Trustees. Janet's background and experience in workforce development and economic development makes her a great addition to the board," said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, Central Piedmont president. "At the same time, we are grateful Mike Hawley and Caldwell Rose will continue as trustees. They have been highly engaged and have provided insightful counsel and leadership. We will rely on our 2021-22 board members heavily as the college welcomes more students back to campus and helps Mecklenburg residents find a post-pandemic path to career growth and greater economic mobility."

LaBar has led the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance since 2019. Prior to coming to Charlotte, she served as president and CEO of Greater Portland Inc., a regional economic development organization. Her other career positions include chief performance officer of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, and research and communications manager for the Center for Workforce Development, a part of the Maricopa County Community Colleges District in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Hawley has practiced tax and business law in Charlotte since 1983, with the global firm K&L Gates and its predecessor Kennedy Covington Lobell & Hickman. He also worked as a visiting professor of law for the University of Florida College of Law, and as a vice president with First National Bank of Tampa.

Rose is a native of Charlotte, and joined NAI Southern Real Estate in 1988. He has served in a leadership role on the Central Piedmont Board of Trustees, chairing the Finance, Facilities and Audit committee since 2018. He holds real estate brokerage licenses in North and South Carolina.

Evans, Dalrymple, Ramirez Join Central Piedmont Board

Central Piedmont Community College announces a recent appointment and two re-appointments to its Board of Trustees.

Michael D. Evans of Charlotte has been appointed to the Central Piedmont board by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners to a four-year term that began July 1. Evans is a retired university business professor and department chair, serving both Winthrop and Johnson C. Smith. He also taught at UNC Charlotte. In addition, he was a founding director and board member of Park Sterling Bank.

Evans earned bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration at Bradley University. He is also a certified financial planner. He currently serves as a board member and treasurer of the Charlotte Regional Visitor's Authority. He is a former president of the Financial Planning Association of Charlotte and Leadership Charlotte.

"We are pleased to have Michael Evans join Central Piedmont's Board of Trustees," said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, college president. "He brings a unique blend of higher education, business and community service experience to the board. His insights will be welcomed as the college moves forward with its new strategic plan."

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper re-appointed Edwin A. Dalrymple to another four-year term as a college trustee. He first joined the Central Piedmont board in 2008. He has chaired the board since 2014. He also has assumed national-level community college leadership. In 2018, he became a member of the Association of Community College Trustees Board of Directors, based in Washington, D.C. Professionally, Dalrymple is a managing director-investments of Wells Fargo Advisors. He has worked in the investment and financial services industry for more than three decades.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education re-appointed Cecilia A. Ramirez to a second four-year term on the college board. She first became a Central Piedmont trustee in 2015. Ramirez is retired from Nova Digital Systems Inc., where she served as vice president of administration. From 1980 to 1996, she taught Spanish and led ESL programs at a number of CMS elementary and high schools. She previously chaired the N.C. Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs and served on the Governor's Hispanic Advisory Council Education Committee.

"The college is grateful for the re-appointments of Ed Dalrymple and Cecilia Ramirez," Deitemeyer said. "They have served with great distinction and engagement. Their continued counsel will be appreciated as the college works to create pathways to economic mobility all of our students can navigate with greater equity and success."
