Siemens Energy Partners with CPCC

Siemens Energy Meets the Skilled labor Gap by partnering with Central Piedmont Community College

A recent Businessweek headline, "Employers Ready to Hire Can't Find Workers Among 9.1% Unemployed," gives a snapshot of the nearing crisis in manufacturing. In the next decade, changing industrial technology and the retirement of millions of baby boomers will mean a severely depleted workforce unless companies address this now.

One company that is meeting this challenge head on is Siemens Energy in Charlotte, NC, makers of turbines and generators (watch this recent NBC "Nightly News" segment). We visited Siemens recently and were impressed by the company's approach to hiring, training and career development. If more companies follow their lead, manufacturing will be stronger than ever by the year 2021.  Read more

CPCC Dental Students Help Provide Low-Cost Care at the CPCC Pelton & Crane Dental Clinic

FOX News covered the wonderful service provided by the CPCC dental students, CPCC instructors and staff dentist at the CPCC Pelton & Crane Dental Clinic.

"Some people come in and they haven't been to the dentist in 20 years. They really needed that help and we were able to provide it so I enjoyed it a lot," said Alena Goncharov, Central Piedmont Community College dental hygiene student.

Goncharov is one of many students that provided free dental care at the convention center last Friday.

Her joy... providing dental service, sometimes daily, as part of the dental hygiene program at CPCC.

"The students are getting their hands-on training to prepare them to go into offices, but the community benefits because they're able to come in for cleanings, x-rays as needed, fluoride treatments," said Judy Qualtieri, CPCC Dental Hygiene director.

All those procedures in one visit cost 20 dollars. The clinic wants their price to be reasonable for the uninsured and underprivileged.

Paying it Forward-CPCC Students Volunteer

Students from both the CPCC Dental Hygiene and Medical Assisting Programs will be participating in the North Carolina Mission of Mercy (MOM). MOM is a portable dental clinic program that is primarily sponsored by the N.C. Dental Health Fund, a non-profit organization administered by the North Carolina Dental Society.  The program seeks to address the access to care issue by providing complimentary dental treatment to the underserved population throughout the state who have few or no other options.

From May 15-20, 2011, the student chapter of the American Welding Society (AWS) at CPCC went on a service-learning project to New Orleans, La. The group worked for Phoenix New Orleans (PNOLA) renovating houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The team also spent time visiting historic and cultural landmarks around the city.

CPCC has a strong history of student service-learning projects that help develop the spirit of philanthropy. Thank you to all our student heros who so generously volunteer for service-learning and other volunteer projects.
