After a succession of unfulfilling part-time jobs, Pennell decided to go back to school. She completed the Adult High School Diploma Program through Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte before she turned 18. In 2011, she went on to earn an associates degree in human services technology from CPCC in order to be able to work with at-risk youth, as well as with individuals with developmental disabilities
