Dr. Maha Gingrich Nominated for 2011 ATHENA Award

Dr. Maha Gingrich, assistant to the Public Information Officer, has been nominated to be the recipient of the 2011 Charlotte ATHENA Award. The ATHENA Award is given to an established woman leader who demonstrates excellence in her profession, gives back to the community in meaningful ways and supports women leaders. The awards program will be Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the Mint Museum Uptown.  Please congratulate Dr. Gingirch on this accomplishment if you see her around campus!

Apprenticeship Programs at the Community College? A European concept with an American Twist... Rebooting Charlotte's workforce

"Years ago there was a big shift. Everybody needed to have a liberal arts education so that you could be a critical thinker and solve problems," says Kenny Colbert of The Employers Association. "Now we're moving back toward the more technical orientation because somebody has to do the work."

"They're looking for someone who can troubleshoot that has core skills in specific areas like PLC programming, pneumatics and circuit analysis," says Chad Ray, Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Central Piedmont Community College.

Siemens Energy Meets the Skilled labor Gap by partnering with Central Piedmont Community College

A recent Businessweek headline, "Employers Ready to Hire Can't Find Workers Among 9.1% Unemployed," gives a snapshot of the nearing crisis in manufacturing. In the next decade, changing industrial technology and the retirement of millions of baby boomers will mean a severely depleted workforce unless companies address this now.

One company that is meeting this challenge head on is Siemens Energy in Charlotte, NC, makers of turbines and generators (watch this recent NBC "Nightly News" segment). We visited Siemens recently and were impressed by the company's approach to hiring, training and career development. If more companies follow their lead, manufacturing will be stronger than ever by the year 2021.  Read more
