Sensoria 2013 Festival 4-12-13 - 4-20-13

Sensoria, CPCC's annual celebration of the arts runs from April 12 -20 and includes many free events for arts enthusiasts. Film screenings, art exhibits, musical performances and lecture series are just part of what's free at CPCC during Sensoria. Know Someone Searching for a Job--Great WSJ Article "take Your Search for a Job Offline"

When Jessica Rodrigues moved to New York after four years of doing AIDS health work in Mozambique, she mostly relied on the Internet to look for work. She emailed her résumé in response to online job postings and waited. When that tack didn't net many offers, she sought help from New York career coach Melissa Llarena, who told her to get more face to face with her search.

That included expanding her professional network and coming up with creative ways to get in front of the right people. The first thing Ms. Rodrigues did was mention that she was looking for work to tango dance-class partners. One dancer, who was a board member for a foundation, referred her to a part-time job doing biotechnology proposal research.  Continued

The American Culinary Federation (ACF) Named Blount the "Pastry Chef of the Year" at its Southeast Regional Conference

Geoff Blount, CEPC, CEC, head of the Baking and Pastry Arts program at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), has been recognized for his culinary arts expertise at the regional level. The American Culinary Federation (ACF) named Blount the "Pastry Chef of the Year" at its Southeast Regional Conference, held March 1 4, in Louisville, Ky.

During the March event, Blount, together with other "Pastry Chef of the Year" semifinalists from across the southeast, participated in a Category P1 Hot Dessert competition. A panel of judges selected Chef Blount as a national finalist based on his skills, menu taste and professionalism. Continued

Early Childhood Education Department Builds Self-Sustaining Garden

The Early Childhood Education Department planted four raised bed vegetable and herb gardens as well as two table gardens (for ADA Compliance and to demonstrate best practices) on Friday, February 15, 2013.  The gardens will be used to teach students the fundamentals needed to start and sustain the gardening process through the College's Health, Safety and Nutrition classes.

As an example, the Exploration Activities class will use the gardens as math and science labs, CPCC's Children with Exceptionalities class will use the gardens to demonstrate ADA compliance and the produce from the gardens will be used to demonstrate healthy eating. Any excess produce will be donated to Friendship Trays, in partnership with Friendship Gardens. Full Story

Time to Start Training: 2013 CPCC Skyline Run April 27. 2013

 The 18th annual CPCC Charlotte Skyline Run, one of nine races featured the in the Run for Your Life "Grand Prix" series, will be held on April 27, 2013. An estimated 1500 runners are expected to attend this family fun event which will support CPCC Student Scholarships and other student needs. The Skyline Run will feature four components which include a 5K run, Walk for Health, Family Fun Run and the Charlotte Baby Jogger Championship. Children will enjoy racing in the "Family Fun Run" as well as spending time in the Kids Zone.
